Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Running Chap!

Happy New Year!

New Year is often all about resolutions – deciding to embrace change to make our lives better.  It’s interesting that we use the word “resolution”, as it implies resolving difficulties and unproductive situations.  Resolutions, New Year or otherwise, are as easy or as difficult to achieve as we choose to make them.  Here are a few tips for making it easy to change those old ways and unhelpful behaviour:

  • Write yourself a list of “positive outcomes” – what will you get that’s positive and pleasurable out of changing how you do things?  Make sure you think of this in positive terms so that it makes sense to your subconscious mind!  Read your list often so that you are really familiar with what you want and why you want it.
  • Set yourself a positive goal.  Really make it irresistible.  Then plan what stepping stones you need to put in place to reach your goal.  Make your goal and your stepping stones things you really want.
  • Think out strategies for handling situations where you might be tempted to slip back into your old ways.  Practise these in your head, find ones that feel good to you and try them out.  If they’re successful, great, keep doing them.  If you still need to modify them, keep trying: you will come up with something that works for you.
  • Ask for help when you need it.  Help might take the form of:
        • practical assistance
        • moral support
        • understanding and love
        • input into a brainstorming session
        • ideas and enthusiasm
        • professional input
  • Give yourself a reward.  Get some pleasure into your life.  Happiness is made up of lots of little pleasures!
