Homoeopathy FAQs
Homoeopathy – isn’t that where I feel worse before I feel better?Maybe! Because homoeopathy works on your energy, most patients experience an increase in energy after taking a remedy. This may show itself by your ability to “express” or throw off symptoms. So you might experience a short-lived increase in your symptoms before a settling down and improvement. This is a homoeopathic aggravation, or healing crisis and is a sign that your remedy has acted well.
What’s involved in a first appointment?
A first appointment takes about 11/2 hours. You’ll be given
the time to talk about your symptoms and how they affect you, and a full
case history of you as a whole person will be taken. Your temperament,
your history, your likes and dislikes, are you warm or are you chilly,
what you like to eat and drink – all these things will be taken into
account.
Follow up appointments take about 30minutes and are a chance to check on how you’re doing and decide on how to proceed. You won’t need a remedy every time you come, and follow up appointments are usually at six to eight week intervals.
How long will treatment take?
Impossible to generalise! Some people are able to heal very quickly
indeed, others take a long time. Skin conditions can be slow to resolve
(but not always) and conditions suppressed by conventional medicines are
certainly more complicated and take longer. How long you’ve
had the condition and whether it is inherited are also factors.
What are remedies made of?
Homoeopathic remedies are made of a huge range of naturally occurring
substances: anything, in fact, that will produce symptoms in a healthy
person. They are specially prepared to give you the energy, rather
than a physical particle, of the substance. There are over 3,000
homoeopathic remedies available to choose from.
What happens if I take the wrong remedy?
It depends. Homoeopathy is a very powerful system of medicine
and it is not true to say that you can do no harm with it – like
any powerful remedy, it commands respect. If you buy a remedy over
the counter for yourself, it’s quite likely that you will choose
one that isn’t perfect for you: you don’t have access
to the information that a professional homoeopath has, and your choice
is extremely limited. However, the potency, or energy, of these remedies
is low and you are unlikely to do any harm with them. Generally speaking,
if you chose the wrong remedy, nothing happens: your symptoms do
not improve. Higher potency remedies, and repeat dosing of any remedy,
may bring on the symptoms of that remedy or have a deeper effect on the
person taking it. It’s best to stop taking a self-prescribed
remedy either when the symptoms improve, or if you get no effect.
Is it safe?
Yes, absolutely safe as long as you apply the rule of thumb above. Professionally
prescribed homoeopathy is safe for babies, children, and pregnant women.
What can homoeopathy treat?
Wrong question! Homoeopathy treats the person, not the disease. Most
people are capable of responding to the remedy. Some people, whose
Vital Energy has been depleted by various factors, including heavy suppression
of their symptoms, or by the very disordering nature of their illness,
may be unable to respond fully. So, whatever your problem, it’s
worth investigating what homoeopathy can do for you.
Do I have to believe in it?
No! Your remedy, if correctly chosen and taken, will act whatever
your mental attitude. Babies and animals react very well to homoeopathy
and they have no idea what they are taking. Of course, you can help
yourself in any situation by having a positive mental attitude. Never
underestimate the power of the mind!
